C2PA vs SynthID
Side-by-side comparison of C2PA Content Credentials and SynthID: where each signal lives, who can verify it, and what AI Watermark Center can inspect.

Short answer
C2PA (Content Credentials) is an open standard for cryptographically signed provenance metadata that can travel with a file. SynthID is Google DeepMind’s invisible watermarking technology that embeds a signal in supported media so a compatible detector can identify that the media was generated or processed with a SynthID-enabled system. They answer different questions: C2PA carries structured provenance assertions in metadata; SynthID is a media-embedded watermark verified by parties who control matching detectors. AI Watermark Center can inspect supported embedded C2PA in still images. It does not detect SynthID. This page does not publish robustness percentages or teach watermark degradation.
Comparison
| Dimension | C2PA / Content Credentials | SynthID |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Open provenance standard for signed manifests and assertions. | Invisible watermark technology from Google DeepMind, adopted by some products on supported modalities. |
| Where the signal lives | Metadata / manifest associated with the asset (when still present). | Embedded in the media payload (pixels, audio samples, etc.) as documented by the implementer. |
| Who controls the detector | Any C2PA-capable validator; trust depends on keys and trust lists. | Parties with compatible SynthID detection (often the provider or Google surfaces for Google AI media). |
| Information carried | Structured assertions (for example tool, actions, timestamps) when present in the manifest. | Detection-oriented watermark signal; not a full public provenance ledger by itself. |
| Metadata dependency | High — stripping or re-encoding metadata can remove credentials. | Designed to remain in media; still depends on modality and implementation — no thresholds claimed here. |
| Verification | Local or online C2PA readers; provider Inspect tools where offered. | Provider or Google verification surfaces for supported media — not a universal public oracle. |
| AWC support | Embedded inspection for JPEG, PNG, WebP (no trust-list verdict UI). | Not available — AWC does not detect SynthID. |
Common misunderstandings
- C2PA present ≠ SynthID present (and the reverse).
- Generic C2PA ≠ a specific provider authorship verdict.
- Missing credentials ≠ proof the asset was not AI-generated.
- EU machine-readable marking ≠ “must be SynthID” or “must be C2PA.”
Limitations
No robustness thresholds, no degradation recipes, and no claim that either system alone satisfies every legal transparency duty.
