OpenAI Watermark Detector

How to check OpenAI and ChatGPT image provenance: official OpenAI verification versus local Content Credentials inspection. AI Watermark Center does not detect SynthID.

Searching for an “OpenAI watermark detector” or “ChatGPT image watermark detector” usually means two different products. OpenAI can check supported OpenAI provenance signals. AI Watermark Center can inspect embedded C2PA in supported JPEG, PNG, and WebP. It cannot detect SynthID. Do not treat AI Watermark Center as an OpenAI watermark detector.

OpenAI official verification

OpenAI Verify

Public provider tool. Looks for supported OpenAI C2PA and SynthID on supported images, and SynthID on supported audio. Result is provider-verified. OpenAI documents a Content Provenance API for supported image and audio files. AI Watermark Center does not integrate that API and does not upload user files to OpenAI.

AI Watermark Center

Local C2PA inspection

Embedded Content Credentials in JPEG, PNG, and WebP, in the browser. No OpenAI upload. AI Watermark Center does not currently detect SynthID. Missing C2PA does not mean the file is not OpenAI.

OpenAI official verification

Help Center documentation points to openai.com/verify for supported image and audio files. After upload, the tool looks for supported OpenAI signals such as a SynthID watermark or a trusted C2PA manifest associated with OpenAI. If it finds one, OpenAI says the content was generated by, or exported from, OpenAI tools. That is not a verdict on factual accuracy or ownership.

A result from OpenAI Verify or the Content Provenance API is a provider-verified result, not an independently generated AI Watermark Center detection.

What not_detected means

A not_detected result does not prove that a file was not generated by OpenAI, that it is human-created, or that it has no AI provenance. Metadata may have been stripped, a watermark may have degraded, the file may predate provenance features, or it may come from an unsupported path or another system. Do not translate not_detected into clean, human, or not AI.

AI Watermark Center

This site inspects supported embedded C2PA locally. It does not send the file to OpenAI just because this page links to official verification. Following that external link is a separate, intentional step using OpenAI’s own upload flow.
