Sora Watermark

How OpenAI documented Sora and Sora 2 provenance: visible watermarks, embedded C2PA, and internal tracing — and what AI Watermark Center cannot inspect in video.

Short answer

OpenAI documented Sora video provenance as a layered system: a visible (including moving) watermark on generated video, embedded C2PA Content Credentials metadata, and internal reverse-image / audio tracing tools used by OpenAI. Those layers are not interchangeable. OpenAI’s own pages note that the Sora product is no longer available as of 26 April 2026. This cluster is historical and research documentation — not a live product how-to. AI Watermark Center has no video inspector; it cannot verify Sora watermarks, play Sora files for SynthID-style checks, or offer “Sora detection” as a tool feature.

Visible mark

OpenAI’s responsible-launch and safety materials describe a visible watermark on Sora-generated videos so people can see that the clip is AI-generated. A visible graphic is not C2PA and is not an internal forensic match. Cropping or covering a logo is not the same as removing signed metadata or defeating internal tracing — and this site does not provide removal instructions.

C2PA Content Credentials

OpenAI also documented embedding C2PA metadata in Sora outputs so provenance can travel with the file when the metadata remains intact. See the dedicated Sora C2PA page. Image C2PA inspection on this site does not extend to Sora video containers.

Internal provenance

OpenAI described internal tools for tracing Sora content (including reverse-image and audio approaches). Those are OpenAI-operated capabilities, not AI Watermark Center features and not a public “upload any video” detector on this domain.

Historical product status

The Sora 2 System Card and related OpenAI pages footnote that as of 26 April 2026 the Sora product is no longer available. Treat capability statements as historical product documentation unless OpenAI republishes current consumer scope.

Limitations

  • No AWC video inspector — stated clearly and intentionally.
  • No fake Sora verification UI.
  • Current ChatGPT/API image and audio provenance is covered under the OpenAI hub, not this historical Sora cluster.
